Building Markets creates jobs and sustains peace in developing countries by championing local entrepreneurs and connecting them to new business opportunities. Building Markets' flagship initiative, the Marketplace projects, provide a suite of services proven to catalyse growth and to create, restore and sustain livelihoods. To date, these projects have redirected over $ 1billion into developing economies.
The Afghanistan Supplier Directory is part of the Afghanistan Marketplace project, an innovative approach to increase the economic impact, and the resulting peace dividend of the massive international military, aid and humanitarian presence in Afghanistan. Starting as a pilot project in Kabul funder by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) from January 2006 to April 2008, the Marketplace subsequently expanded with additional funding from CIDA from May 2008 to March 2012. Field offices were opened in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif (July 2008 to March 2011) and Kandahar (September 2008 to March 2011). A field office in Lashkar Gah was operated from December 2008 to March 2012, thanks to the generous contribution of the UK Department for International Development (DfID).
